Welcome to Tagmoor Farm

Tagmoor Farm has been in the MacCurrach family since just after the Second World War, when James' Grandfather, Major R P MacCurrach, purchased it and moved here with his young family. Back then it consisted of about 80 acres. Today it is farmed by James and his father, Martin and now extends to approximately 500 acres - including a pair of holiday cottages and a caravan site that are run alongside the arable and beef enterprises.

The beef enterprise is managed by James who, since returning from college in 2002 has extended the numbers and gradually built up the business selling the beef direct from the farm. The herd now supplies beef to the Old Butcher ’s restaurant in Stow-on-the-Wold, The Fox public house at Little Barrington and Recipe for Success together with many other loyal customers around the Cotswolds.

One of the first things James did was buy in Popeye the pedigree Hereford Bull from a farm near Tetbury and it is his ambition to increase the pedigree numbers within the herd. The herd currently consists of 45 breeding cows and their calves, and 1 pedigree bull. During the summer months they are grazed on traditional pastures or grass leys. In the winter they are brought in and kept in the shed or the adjoining coral. They are fed home made hay or silage. It is hard work feeding them manually twice a day for several months but it is worth it to see some of the most contented farm animals you will find anywhere!

The calves are taken to an abattoir at Long Compton, approximately 12 miles away, when they are approximately 24 months old. After slaughter they are hung for 3-4 weeks before the beef is cut up ready for James to collect.

Cows can detect odours up to 5 miles away, which is why you don't find them in your son's bedroom.

Cows stand up and lie down about 14 times a day, they are also good at press-ups and star-jumps.
